Parrot fashion ... Friday in frilly jumper
POORLY parrots are beating the big freeze - after a bird sanctuary boss made them tiny jumpers to keep out the cold.
The cosy fleece outfits were invented by Yvonne MacMillan, who also designed little leg warmers for her chilly creatures.
And she even created a cuddly corset for one distressed cockatoo to keep him warm and stop him pulling his feathers out. Yvonne, 49, who runs Scotland's only parrot sanctuary on the island of Kerrera, near Oban in Argyll, said: "The cold weather has been a nightmare.
"It may seem a bit mad putting jumpers on parrots but if you take your dog out into the freezing cold you would put a jacket on them."
Yvonne cares for 50 parrots at the sanctuary, but many of them have no feathers - leaving them vulnerable to the cold weather. And she had to make a special outfit for self-harming cockatoo Friday.
She said: "It has leather armour and frills to stop him pulling it up. He could remove it in minutes but he seems to like it. But without feather down to keep them warm, a jumper is the only way."
This is friday when he first came in. He was much loved but sadly, as we commonly witness, he had self- abused. He underwent surgery and had several skin grafts. He was destined to wear a collar for the rest of his life unless we could find another way. | This is Friday today wearing his parrot jumper. He does not enjoy being handled to have it put on but really enjoys wearing it. Over the past few months Friday has not chewed his chest wall and with the added protection he has healed wonderfully.
