The Island Parrot Sanctuary
AGM.
Sunday the 18th of March.

We are happy to say that we are holding our third AGM on Sunday 18th of
March at the Island Parrot Sanctuary on the Island of Kerrera. The meeting
starts at 2pm.
You are welcome to come on the 12.30 ferry and enjoy a guided walk around
the sanctuary to meet all the birds and see their progress, then have a bite
to eat, meet the team who run the sanctuary and care for the birds.
Transport to the sanctuary will be provided from the ferry at 12.30pm.
We look forward to seeing you on the day and hearing your thoughts and hopes
for the sanctuary's future.

Please let us know if you wish to come to the meeting and require transport.

Kind regards
Yvonne MacMillan

Pet Champ 2011

We were ecstatic when we discovered that Gorgeous had been crowned The Daily Record and Pets At Home Pet Champ 2011 today. Gorgeous’ owner very kindly decided to donate the prize of £500 and a £250 voucher for Pets At Home to our sanctuary. The money will help us to provide for the birds over the winter.

Gorgeous is a courageous little Goffin’s Cockatoo that has overcome problems that many people would fail to recover from. He has been left with permanent brain damage and will never recover sufficiently to lead a normal life. The story of this small parrot being fed hardcore drugs has shocked people because so little is known about parrot abuse. The sad truth is that a great number of parrots are abused and other birds are suffering a similar fate to Gorgeous through alcohol or drugs. We know some things about Gorgeous’ life before and although it may horrify and sicken us to the core let’s not dwell on the negative. If we honestly believe that he has been dealt a bad hand then we must also acknowledge that he has dealt with it with such courage. Whilst we cannot ever change what has happened to him we can choose to can gain strength from this brave little soul and use his horrendous story to make positive changes. Let’s look at Gorgeous not with pity but with admiration for a bird that is so strong and determined, look at him and think “what can I do?"

Do something! Rescue, donate, volunteer, sponsor, raise awareness, educate. Please don’t look away and hope someone else will do something to help for if we'd did this Gorgeous may not be here today – remember indifference kills too!

Barlinnie Prison

We are delighted to announce that staff and inmates of Barlinnie Prison have generously agreed to help the 'inmates' at our sanctuary! They responded to our desperate plea for help and have provided us with some much needed building materials such as bricks, shingles, offcuts of wood and heavy duty aviary wire. In addition to this they have also made us a shed for storing materials and a beautiful hand-crafted picnic table and bench. Barlinnie prisoners are keen to help the birds in any way they can and have decided to make them toys and also some carefully designed jumpers for our pluckers. We are overjoyed that the assistance will be ongoing as the help we have received from them is invaluable. We would like to express our enormous gratitude to everyone involved and offer a special thank you to Gary, Dave, Mick and Willy.
